About Us

Who We Are

We are Riverbend neighbors and other private citizens, local farmers, commuters, tourists, and business owners, including the Oregon wine industry. Citizens and visitors in Yamhill County oppose continued operation or expansion of Riverbend Landfill because a landfill in farmland damages crops, and a dump next to the river is an environmental catastrophe waiting to happen.

Stop the Dump Coalition represents each of us who see the damage that Riverbend Landfill is currently causing and will continue to cause if the landfill is allowed to remain open beyond August 31, 2030 -- the expiration date in its closure permit -- or to expand onto more prime farm land.

Stop the Dump Coalition will work tirelessly to insure that DEQ follows through on its commitment to close this environmentally dangerous landfill.

Our Mission

The Stop the Dump Coalition--including Coalition Partners and Waste Not of Yamhill County, Stop the Dump Coalition's 501(c)4 fund-raising arm--opposes continued operation and/or expansion of Riverbend Landfill.

We want to stop the dump from:

  • staying open past the expiration      of its 8-year closure permit (August 31, 2030)
  • increasing in size
  • hauling in more      out-of-country or out-of-state waste to be left forever on the banks of      the South Yamhill River (or until the next 9.0 Cascadia earthquake)
  • threatening our air and      soils, our groundwater and river, our homes, our roads, our farms and      businesses.

We want Yamhill County and its waste handlers to:

  • recover all recyclable      materials
  • turn our waste into      useful products like compost, electricity, and fuel oils.

 We want County officials to:

  • implement the      County's Solid Waste Management Plan, which requires the County      to plan for our solid waste future and to consider alternatives in light      of the anticipated closure of Riverbend Landfill.
  • find long-term,      community-friendly, sustainable solutions to solid waste disposal in      Yamhill County.
